Bench/window seat cushions
Foam cut to size
Welcome to Jody Gray upholstery school.....
Whether you are new to the upholstery craft looking to learn new skills and get creative or someone with previous experience looking for a greater challenge, we have the course or workshop to suit you.
Whichever course you choose, you will be provided with expert tuition from your tutor who has over 20 years teaching experience. Class sizes are kept small (maximum 6 people per session) allowing for plenty of one-to-one support to guide you through your project.
Rather than using the past ‘traditional’ upholstery methods, all of our courses and workshops use modern tools, materials and techniques; guns instead of hammers, staples instead of tacks, foam instead of horsehair. No previous experience is necessary as you will be fully introduced to these tools and techniques as part of the course.
You will be amazed at what you can create in a relatively short amount of time using these methods and the professional finish that can be achieved.
Welcome to Jody Gray upholstery school.....
Whether you are new to the upholstery craft or someone with previous experience looking for a greater challenge, our weekly workshops are suitable for all. We provide expert tuition in a relaxed and spacious environment. Class sizes are kept small (maximum 6 people per session) allowing for plenty of one-to-one support to guide you through your project.
You will be guided through the design process and supported in stripping down and preparing your piece, including any repairs to the frame should they be required, as well as waxing or painting woodwork. You will be introduced to the various tools and advised on measuring and cutting your fabric and any pattern matching required. You will be tutored through the various techniques, from applying webbing, hessian and wadding, cuts and corners, to finishing techniques such as shallow or deep buttoning, stud work or piping.
With a measured approach and an eye for detail you will be amazed at what you can create in a relatively short amount of time and the professional finish that can be achieved.
Basic materials, such as staples, glue etc.. are included in the session cost. Any additional upholstery materials that you require to complete your project such as hessian, foam, webbing etc.. are available to buy at reduced prices.
All our workshops are flexible, simply book a session that is convenient to you on a pay as you go basis. Our workshops are all 3 hours long and cost £10 per hour.
Refreshments are provided during our sessions and we have ample parking onsite. Should you also need fabric for your project this can be purchased next door at Wath Court Fabrics and if you don't have a project piece we can provide footstool frames to order.

Choosing Your Fabric
Having made the decision to have your item of furniture re-upholstered, the next, and most important decision is your choice of fabric. There are thousands of fabrics available on the market, however, it is important that before making your choice you consider certain factors:
The first thing to consider is how your item of furniture will be used in your home. If the item will receive light or moderate use, then general domestic fabrics will be suitable. If on the other hand the piece will be subjected to daily heavy usage, then this will need to be covered in a tough, more durable, tightly woven fabric.
Fabric suppliers usually classify their products into 3 categories; Light Domestic for low/occasional usage, General Domestic for daily usage and Severe Domestic for continual use through the day and in environments with children and pets.
The easiest way to decide if a fabric will be suitable is to look at its thread count. The higher the thread count, the more tightly woven the fabric is, and the better the wear will be. A well known test is the Martindale Test, which scores the wear of a fabric. Any fabric with a rub count of over 30,000 will be suitable for heavy use.
All fabrics used for domestic upholstery must legally comply with The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. If you wish to use a fabric that is not fire retardant and does not comply then you can either pay to have the fabric treated or alternatively we can supply a FR felt or interliner underneath your fabric. This will be at an additional cost.
We work with a number of suppliers and can offer you a wide range of suitable fabrics from all the leading upholstery brands. Fabrics can be purchased through ourselves and the cost incorporated alongside our labour fees.
